1. Different style of writing: interesting conclusions drawn from lots of different sources, and the authors way of coming to a conclusion is very different from books we have read before.
2. The inclusion of data in the story: it puts the story into more perspective, and makes it easier to compare the results and come to the same conclusions as the book does.
3. Talked about the passages, and the idea of incentives.
4. The idea of incentives was a really big part of the introduction and chapter 1
5. There could be a balance between morality and economics
a. Sometimes you have sacrifice morality for economics, and vice versa. And there is a connection between two. For example, the fine that was established in Israeli daycares. The parents no longer felt bad about leaving their kids later because they paid the $3 fine, so they replaced their sense of morality with economics. .Also, the tips you give to the waiters and the people who take your luggage make you feel less guilty about making them do the work.
Chapter 2: Bryan 1. Economics makes the ku klux klan run, it is a racist group of people working against African Americans. People were looking for jobs and blacks would get in the way taking up the jobs and what not. The Ku Klux Klan over a certain period of time grew and size and instead of being like a gang, it became into a social organization united against a people that eventually developed its own bible and to some extent class systems. IN a way, the KKK had their own economic system and so the need of such violence was not needed.
2. The gathering of the information and history go hand and hand together, to gather information to use effectively someone must learn the history of what they are going to learn about, what happed before the previous. This shows how the Word of mouth and spread of information can disassemble a local power that seems indestructible. Just like the news stations caused the kkk to have less clan meeting attendance, this connects to the internet, and how it is causing the relevance of other jobs to decrease, such as real-estate agents, now that people can sell their own houses and things online some people who's job is to do that are becoming Less important.
Chapter 3: Blair 1. The focus of this chapter was about just 1 thing: the gang in Chicago and the drug trade. We all seemed to like this chapter the best because it focused on one specific topic instead of jumping around like the other chapters too
2. Its crazy how the researcher could just walk up to a gang in the projects, armed only with a clipboard, and ask them how they feel about being black and poor. And the fact that they allowed for him to have access to all this information was just unbelievable as well.
3. The influence that crack had on poor communities was astounding, because all the progress that they had made was undone by crack
4. The intrigue of the crack business was similar to the NFL or Hollywood. Even though there was a small change of success, the people who wanted to be movie stars or foot soldiers wanted a shot at the money and fame that came with getting to the top of their career
5. The risks that a foot solider takes is crazy. It seems to us that it isn't worth the risk to sell the drugs.
Chapter 4: Sergio 1.what would off influence more to a criminal family?the education that this one had revived or the economy that they live in.
the economy in the present affects more to their family that not the economy in the past, meaning that if they now have a better economy they can then keep going with their lives and not get into drogues
as a chapter idea we were expecting lots more that not the chapter gave us, the talk about abortion they made basically one idea general into the whole chapter, some of the ideas their are not been proved and they are accusatives in some way, also is a topic really sensitive for teenager at this time period.
